Running can feel undeniably daunting. For many people who start their fitness journey with weight-lifting, running as cardio can be a hated activity. Not only can it seem ‘boring’ compared to lifting weights, but also can be humbling. Results in lifting heavy weights don’t often translate with longevity on a run. If you are scared to start running but want to see results, implement the excellent tips from Active with Abby to get started!
The Tip I found to be most interesting and helpful was her commentary on ‘Identify Limiting Beliefs!’
She spoke about her experience when she first started running. She said that she was obsessive about pace, and that a fast pace meant she was a good runner. This is totally relatable! I know that if I tried to run on the treadmill or outside, I would not be able to go very fast. If I did try despite my lack of speed, I would have to take a lot of breaks. These are huge limiters for me, someone whose most defining characteristic is probably ‘competitive’. Images of women quickly getting through 7 miles and looking glamorous flash in my mind when I even think about it. But that is not serenity. That is it’s competitor; comparison. And we must fight comparison with vulnerability in order to achieve serenity.

Abby speaks about how she believes playing Lacrosse in high school was a big factor in these limiting beliefs. This was such a good point on her end. High school volleyball has definitely impacted my perception of what it means to be an athlete. If I am not winning I don’t feel like it’s worth it. This is a harmful perception because it doesn’t acknowledge the theme behind what we’re doing it for. The purpose of running is not to be the fastest, it’s to help your body be more conditioned. Heart health is one of the most important reasons to participate in cardio. Being vulnerable in this sense is acknowledging the rest of Abby’s tips on her blog post as well as the rest of her content is super helpful in overcoming this frame of thought.
